Creating an Elevator Speech

By glennandrew

Remember the last time you were on an elevator at a conference and someone ask you what you did for a living. Did you blurt out your job title or description? What were the chances that the person remembered what you said five minutes after they got off the elevator?

What if you have a simple, easy to recall phrase that would both be memorable and describe the benefits of doing business with you? Would that be useful?

Well, here’s a simple, three-step formula I learned for crafting an elevator speech. You can use it to get started:

  1. Do you know how ______ (state the problem)?
  2. Well, what I do is ______ (state your solution)!
  3. Do you know of anyone that ______ (ask for a referral)?

That’s it! Now it’s your turn to apply this formula to create your own. Be creative and compelling!
